Humans Live In A Simulation
Do humans live in a simulation?
Elon Musk thinks so, Stephen Hawking said as much before he passed away recently. So if humans live in a simulation, how does that change our daily lives and interactions?
If I knew I was living in a simulation and that nothing really mattered, I would be able to go for broke. I would have nothing to lose. I could ask out any girl I wanted, because rejection is meaningless. I can make money however I want, because ethics is a human construct. We can do whatever we want.
However, there are those out there who would become incredibly depressed if they knew they lived in a simulation. They would have an existential crisis and likely become very sad and cynical about their lives. They would consider life meaningless in a bad way instead of a good way. And stop trying.
It also poses the question, is there an escape from this simulation? And if so, what is outside the simulation? Wouldn’t a simulation require an architect of some sort to build the graphics and run the algorithms? If I knew I lived in a simulation I would want a peak behind the curtain. With or without permission.
So our daily lives could be affected in many ways. We could become depressed, we could become maniacs, we could ignore it or we could attempt an escape. I’m sure there would be some exceptions and people who felt ambiguous about living in a simulation, but most would fall into one of the four aforementioned categories.
The search for meaning in a very possibly meaningless existence causes many people a lot of suffering. So a simulation would give those people a way out of their suffering. They could see the simulation as their purpose and that could satisfy them. Or they could decide not to search for meaning anymore, because there is no meaning. But by ending their search, they would end their suffering.
